Preparing supplemental data

Manuscripts should be complete and self-contained. All regular figures and tables should be included in the main body of the manuscript and not in a supplemental file. However, we do support supplemental information if it is ancillary to the article’s content but has excessive file size or file type that is not supported in the main article. Supplemental data will be reviewed as a part of the usual manuscript review process and will be judged by the same rigorous criteria as those used for the main body of the paper. Any supplemental information will be linked into the final published article in the form supplied by the author, but will not be displayed within the paper. Here are other details:

  1. Authors can provide datasets, tables, movies, or other information as additional files. These files can be uploaded during the submission process or email to
  2. The maximum file size for Supplemental files is 32 MB each.
  3. Supplemental files should be referenced clearly by file name within the text of the article, e.g. “See additional file 1: Movie for performing this analysis.”
  4. Examples of suitable formats:

Additional documentation: PDF (Adobe Acrobat) Animations: SWF (Shockwave Flash) Movies: MOV (QuickTime), MPG (MPEG) Tabular data: XLS (Excel spreadsheet), CSV (Comma separated values)
